Brief History of Department

The Department of Medicine was established in December, 1985 with late Dr.E.A. O Fakoya as its first Head of Department and as part of the foundation units of the OACHS and OOUTH.
The Department of Medicine renders Clinical Services s well as training for medical students and postgraduate resident doctors of both Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital. These training programmes were accredited and re-accredited by both the MDCN and Postgraduate Medical College – (NPMCN, WAPMC).The postgraduate training programme is awaiting another re-accreditation visit by the NPMC.
It also renders research activities and host students from other country’s Medical Schools on rotational clinical attachment with various durations of stay.
Structured along specialties of Neurology and Psychiatry, Nephrology,   Rheumatology Cardiology Endocrinology and Metabolism, Respiratory Medicine and Gastroenterology, it has 2 wards of 20 beds each for male and female in-patient care, a functional Haemodialysis unit (4beds) as well as a purpose built Dame Adebutu Diabetes Care Centre.

Research Activities/Proposed Event

- World Diabetics Day with Diabetes Association of Nigeria (DAN)

Generally:

Other Activities incorporated into Department Units routine include among others

- Attendance to Emergencies Services when necessary from other hospital units and wards viz, A & E, Ward, ICU

- Cannulation and Haemodialysis sessions at the Dialysis Unit/Ward

- Point of care services e.g. ECG, HbA. C assay, Echocardiography session on Thursdays.

- Hospital based Critical Incident Audit (CIA) on quarterly basis
