BRIEF HISTORY

The department of paediatrics took off in January 1986 as one of the foundation Clinical departments of the teaching hospital, having a single children ward with 10 cots. With further development in terms of patients turn out and staff strength, the department acquired 3 additional beds and 2 phototherapy units by July 1986. The Inital staff strength was Consultant 1, SHO/Registrars 4, House Officer 3, Senior Nursing Sister 1, Sister 3, Staff Nurses 8.

The pattern of diseases treated in the department were very similar to those in other parts of the Country with Scabies, Tuberculosis and protein energy malnutrition being very common.

The department engages in the teaching of undergraduate Medical Students as well as post graduate residents, via lectures bedside teachings, seminars and grand rounds.

As at 1988 December, the department operates out patient Consultant Clinic in the following areas, Cardiology, Growth and Development, Endocrinology, Chest, Sickle Cell disease and neonatal (1989).

Since inception, the department has produced successful candidates inall the stages of the post graduate medical examinations and is the first department to produce Consultant.
